Irma Vazquez Marches Because...

When I was about 11, one of the nuns in my school called me a "bold and brazen girl." Though at the time it hurt my feelings, eventually I came to embrace her words.
On January 19, 2019, I will march in the hopes that all women, their children and their children's children, can be born into a world where they are free and able to live lives of their own choosing, boldly and unapologetically.

 I will march so that all women can embrace their true nature without fear or shame or guilt, so that they may use their many and diverse gifts to enrich all of humanity far into the distant future.

March On!

The Arizona Supreme Court's recent ruling to strike the Invest in Ed proposition from the ballots at the behest of corporate interests is a dire setback to Arizona's teachers, students, and families. This decision is an unforgivable breach of the people's will that we must answer. With removal of the widely-supported, non-partisan Invest in Ed measure just prior to this election, the Republican-led state government sent a clear message. Radical career politicians who don't represent us have hijacked our state and are keeping a stranglehold on our state's future by choking funding for public education. Along with so many other Arizonans who support public education as a cornerstone of civic good, I was shocked—though unfortunately not surprised—to hear of the loss of Invest in Ed, a measure borne of the wave of grassroots people power during the #RedForEd movement this year. I march because I have always marched. Even as a young teenager, I saw inequality and senseless war. I march to fight injustice. Even more so, under the watch of this crooked administration I see injustice INCREASING. I see our public lands being sold to the highest bidder. I see environmental racism, institutional racism and systemic racism. People of Color are not safe in our country. I see immigrants demonized. I see oil pipelines taking precedence over clean water and treaty rights. I see women shouting #ME TOO from the rooftops. I see our free press imperiled. I see our children’s health neglected and threatened to save a few corporate tax dollars. I see a pretty good attempt at insuring our people being dismantled due to greed and revenge.
