New Name, Same Mission for the 2019 Women's March

Bold plans are in the works for the 2019 Women’s March, to occur on Sat., January 19, 1 p.m., at the Prescott Courthouse Plaza. The first order of business at a recent leadership meeting was to rename Women’s March On Prescott Yavapai County Women March On. The new moniker better reflects where those who have marched with us throughout 2018 reside. The predicate “March On” links the group to national March On, a 501(c)(4) organization formed after the 2017 Women’s March “to coordinate concrete actions at the federal, state, and local level through the joint efforts of millions of marchers.” Yavapai County Women March On is that local level and we intend to build a strong grassroots coalition of pro-women, anti-authoritarian marchers in our county that will fight for concrete improvements in women’s lives here and everywhere.

The new mission statement of YCWMO puts it like this:

"Millions of us marched in 2017 and 2018. We resisted. We persisted. We organized. We effected change. And then we voted, electing an unprecedented number of women.

"Now, looking forward to 2020, we continue to mobilize. We March On! We march for change. We march so our collective voices continue to be heard.

"We march in solidarity for a fair, just, and inclusive world where all people regardless of race, national origin, religion, gender or sexual orientation are treated fairly and equally. We march united against the forces of inequality, injustice, and intolerance in all forms. We march knowing that together we will continue to make progress toward a better future for everyone.

"We take strength from the millions who have marched in solidarity and who continue to March On for a better, brighter future."

In conjunction with the upcoming Women’s March, YCWMO is co-sponsoring the Women’s Wave Art Exhibit. The juried show and sale opens at the BUtiFULL gallery (211 N. Granite Street, Prescott) on Jan. 18 and runs through Jan. 25. The deadline to submit work for the competition is Dec. 7. Guidelines may be viewed and downloaded here.

Pussy hats, solidarity scarves, t-shirts, buttons, and stickers will be on sale before and during the March with 100% of profit to benefit local not-for-profit organizations. In early January, Why We March, a photo book documenting the local Women’s March movement, will be available for sale in a limited edition. The final program of March events will be announced in mid-December.

If you would like to volunteer to make hats, scarves, or signs, please contact YCWMO chair Amy Hurst at leaflady@cableone.net or via our facebook page.
